Pac-Man: Escaping the Ghosts Without Losing Your Mind

Look, Pac-Man is basically the grandfather of all arcade games. I remember dropping way too many quarters into this machine at the local pizza place. Now I can just play it in my browser for free, which is great, but the ghosts are just as infuriating as I remember.

It sounds easy enough: eat all the dots in the maze, don't get touched by a ghost. But if you've ever actually played it, you know it turns into a frantic panic real fast once the ghosts start ganging up on you. This version plays incredibly smooth, which just means you have no one to blame but yourself when Blinky corners you.

The Ghosts Aren't Actually Random

The biggest secret to Pac-Man is realizing the ghosts aren't just wandering around randomly. They all have their own specific AI and behaviors. Once you know what they're trying to do, they get a lot easier to avoid.

Controls (It's Just Steering)

Desktop: Use the arrow keys. Try to input your turn slightly before you reach the intersection so you clip the corner.

Mobile: Swipe in the direction you want to go. Again, swipe early.

How to Not Die Instantly

Clear the Bottom First

My go-to strategy is always clearing the bottom half of the maze as fast as possible. The ghosts spawn in the middle and usually head up or out to the sides first. By the time they start making their way down, you've already eaten everything and can move to the safer top areas.

Don't Waste the Power Pellets

The four big glowing dots in the corners are your only defense. When you eat one, the ghosts turn blue and you can eat them. But don't just grab a power pellet because it's there! Wait until the ghosts are actually closing in on you, then grab it and turn the tables. It's a lifesaver when you're trapped.

Use the Tunnels

Those tunnels on the left and right sides of the screen that let you warp to the other side? They slow the ghosts down. If you go through a tunnel, you maintain your speed, but ghosts lose a bunch of speed when they enter it. It's the best way to lose Blinky when he's right on your tail.

Why Does It Get So Hard?

The early levels lull you into a false sense of security. But as you progress, a few nasty things happen: the ghosts get faster, and the power pellets last for less time. Eventually, the ghosts don't even turn blue anymore when you eat a power pellet—they just reverse direction for a second. That's when you have to rely purely on dodging.

Questions I See a Lot

Is there a safe spot?

Yeah, there's a specific spot right above the ghost spawn box where, if you stand completely still and none of the ghosts see you go there, they'll just wander around without touching you. But you can't beat the game hiding there.

What happens at level 256?

In the original arcade game, half the screen turns into a glitchy mess and it becomes unplayable. Most web versions fix this bug though.

Why did the ghosts suddenly turn around?

They periodically switch between "chase mode" and "scatter mode" (where they run to their assigned corners). This gives you brief moments to breathe.
